Geographic Information Systems are powerful tools that leverage digital mapping and associated database information to provide location-based analysis, interpretation and presentation of data to support informed decision-making. In the transportation sector, these systems can provide transportation officials, local and state governments, and planning districts with access to a wealth of transportation information, often drawing from massive data sets collected by Departments of Transportation. The key is in understanding how the data is created and learning how to access and leverage it for applications.
Using class discussions, transportation case studies and hands-on application, this one-day workshop provides proficient-level GIS users with advanced skills to ultimately produce and publish online maps. Instructor Dan Widner will draw upon 36 years of experience in mapping and GIS. “The beauty of GIS-T (GIS for Transportation) is that it uses historical roadway data to support present and future planning. It’s a technique that brings real value to static information,” Widner explained.
Starting with an overview of basic GIS concepts, such as digital representation and associated tabular information, the workshop will exercise several data sources such as state base mapping data, transportation business data from the VDOT Linear Referencing System (LRS) and federal data sources such as the National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). The dynamic segmentation module will provide participants with the opportunity to create events along a linear network and create output in GIS format. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to publish GIS data on the internet and will understand web mapping through ArcGIS Online.

Instructor: Dan Widner has 36 years of diverse experience in GIS and Mapping in the federal, state and private sector. Most recently he was the Virginia State GIS Coordinator at the Virginia Geographic Information Network, where he provided strategic GIS coordination and leadership for Virginia state and local government and represented Virginia GIS at the federal and national level. His transportation GIS experience stems from eight years as GIS Program Manager at the Virginia Department of Transportation and from four years at a commercial GIS software firm. Dan has a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from Indiana University and currently is an independent consultant.
