According to the FHWA, speeding is a factor in almost one-third of all fatal crashes. While much attention is focused on high-speed interstates, nearly half of speed-related fatalities occur on lower speed collector and local roads.
UVA-TTA has joined together with Dane Ismart, Louis Berger & Associates, to offer a new Speed Management Techniques and Applications course. Designed to provide participants with the knowledge and principles for applying various techniques for countering speeding and speed related crashes, this one-day class presents methods for identifying potential hazardous areas related to crashes involving roadway departures, intersections, and bicycle and pedestrians.
A portion of the course is devoted to discussing and demonstrating methods for determining appropriate design and posted speeds, including the application of USLIMTS2 software, a web-based tool designed to help practitioners set reasonable, safe and consistent speed limits for specific sections of roadways. The Fatality Analysis Reporting System, as well as other sources of crash data, will also be reviewed. Case studies related to speed reduction strategies in rural and urban areas will provide opportunities to apply the appropriate technique to specific crash scenarios.
Instructor Dane Ismart retired from the FHWA after serving in policy, planning and engineering positions, including implementing the Intermodal Management Systems regulations. He has authored manuals and taught NHI courses on Capacity Analysis, Access Management, Financial Management, Travel Demand Forecasting and Intermodal Planning, and is a member of the TRB Highway Capacity Subcommittee on Unsignalized Intersections. He is a graduate of Georgia Tech with a Bachelor’s Degree and received his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota
