Here at the Transportation Training Academy, we spent the last few months thinking about wintry weather. Instructor Tony DeCresie went out around the region to deliver our new Winter Maintenance Operations workshop.  Snow fighting practices, anti-icing and de-icing strategies, appropriate snow and ice control equipment – Tony covered it all. From Suffolk to Roanoke and Lynchburg to Arlington, we got the state ready for snowy roads.

Enough about winter — spring is right around the corner! I’ve been thinking about ways to get out to enjoy the warm weather. Check out Richmond’s new RVA Bike Share Program.  For under $2, users can get bike access for up to 45 minutes – perfect for zooming across downtown, going to get some groceries or meeting up with friends.  The program currently has over a dozen kiosks around the downtown area. Check out my video below and learn about the program.

We’ve also been working hard to develop a new two-day Public Works Safety Workshop featuring roadside maintenance safety, excavating and trenching, road and bridge safety, and storm preparations. Our first workshop is scheduled for February 28 – March 1 in Virginia Beach. We’ll also be in Thornburg on March 21-22 and Harrisonburg on April 19-20. Plan to attend and sharpen up your safety and maintenance skills.

As we dive into 2018, we have a lot of great training and technical assistance ideas ready to implement. I’m happy to be your Safety Circuit Rider outreach coordinator and would love to talk with you about any local safety concerns.  Please send me an email – jwz9m@virginia.edu – I’d love to meet you on my next journey. Stay safe everybody!
