UVA’s Engineering and Society history professor Peter Norton’s op-ed in Wired magazine contends, “autonomous vehicles (AVs) cannot deliver on their own promises of safety and efficiency if they deter walking.” He suggests the safety and comfort of pedestrians must be a top priority in creating environments in which AVs can operate effectively.

Norton is the author of Fighting Traffic: The Dawn of the Motor Age in the American City.
