This hybrid online class will combine both live instruction and independent online work that you will complete during the day.  Independent work will include quizzes, readings, videos and short assignments.  Access to a computer with a webcam (either a camera that is built into your laptop or one that connects via USB), a reliable internet connection and a workspace that is free from distraction and noise will set you up for success.


Accelerated bridge construction incorporates several fundamental attributes that reduce road user impacts, costs and construction time.  Incorporation of ABC practices into your project will help minimize traffic delays and community disruption while increasing safety in the construction zone.  The instructor uses Accelerated Bridge Construction to introduce several strategies that state and local agencies utilize to replace small bridges.

Join instructor, Walt Catlett for this lively online class and discussion forum that will change the way you think about small bridge replacement options.  You will learn more about accelerated bridge construction fundamentals, bridge terminology, precast concrete box culverts, three-sided rigid frames, precast modular bridges and geosynthetic reinforced soil integrated bridge systems.  By the end of the training, you will learn the basic steps for manufacturing, delivery and installation of these ABC options while challenging your perceptions on current practices.

Jose Gomez

Jose Gomez served as Director of Research for the Virginia Transportation Research Council, the Virginia Department of Transportation’s research division. He first joined the Research Council in June of 1992 as a Research Scientist and spent 9 years conducting applied research and technical consultation in the areas of bridge engineering; focusing on field testing, computer modeling, the use of advanced structural materials in bridge design, and bridge management. Jose served the next 9 years as Associate Director of Research, managing the Structures, Pavements, and Geotechnical Research Team. He was named Director of Research in April, 2011, retiring in August 2016. Highlights of his career at VTRC include Principal or co-Principal Investigator on 16 external grants totaling over $5.4 million in research and implementation funds, author or co-author of 42 research reports, and co-PI to Rutgers University, the lead agency in the initial FHWA Long-Term Bridge Performance Program Grant. This grant total was $25 million, of which $5 million came to VTRC in support of the bridge research program. Jose is currently a Lecturer in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. He has a BS in Civil Engineering from VMI and Masters and Doctorate in Civil Engineering from U.Va. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Who Should Attend

This class was developed for inspectors, installers and design engineers alike. Previous experience with small bridge replacement design, installation or inspection is not required. Inspectors, installers, engineers, planners, equipment operators, and laborers will learn accelerated bridge construction concepts, basic bridge concepts, and techniques critical to the successful installation and inspection of precast bridges elements/systems.
