This course provides relevant information to individuals who have to maintain asphalt pavements. The course material reviews the basic concepts of an asphalt pavement by describing the roles of the various layers of an asphalt pavement structure. The material will help the student identify common asphalt distress, the cause of the distress, and the appropriate treatments. The latest techniques, materials, and equipment will be reviewed with an emphasis on repairing the asphalt distress properly the first time. Current industry standards to properly repair problems such as cracking and potholes will be presented in detail. An overview of basic surface sealing operations, such as seal coats, micro surfacing, and overlays will be presented.

An overview of surface sealing operations to extend the life of the pavement will be reviewed. These include Liquid Bituminous Seal Coat, Slurry Seal, Micro-Surfacing, Ultra-Thin Friction Course, and Bituminous Overlays.

Sam Gregory retired in February 2012 after 36 years of working in the transportation community for various public and private employers. He is currently enjoying retirement by working part time conducting LTAP training, course development, and technical assistance support for local government public works agencies; instructing bituminous field certification and maintenance courses for North East Center of Excellence for Pavement Technology (NECEPT) out of Penn State University; and assisting in transportation related research projects for Navarro and Wright Consulting Engineers. He was past chairman of the Maintenance Technical Advisory Group for the Pennsylvania State Transportation Innovation Council (STIC).
The majority of his experience was 28 years of service with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in various positions culminating as the Highway Maintenance Manager in charge of Mifflin / Juniata and Perry County Maintenance Organizations. In this positon he directed multi-year strategic plan preparation and provided oversight of asset management that included 585 roadway miles and 582 bridges. It required administering a $12 million budget and overseeing labor management of 110+ employees.

Special Registration Instructions for Employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation
VDOT employees must register through the VDOT Virtual Campus. Registration fees and related expenses for all VDOT employees will be paid from the VDOT Learning Services Center budget. Registrants should contact their District Training Coordinator or the VDOT Learning Services Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses.
Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend U. Va. TTA workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a U. Va. TTA workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Coordinator, or VDOT Learning Services Center on travel approval procedures.
