Description

This hybrid online class will combine both live instruction and independent online work that you will complete during the day.  Independent work will include quizzes, readings, videos and short assignments.  Access to a computer with a webcam (either a camera that is built into your laptop or one that connects via USB), a reliable internet connection and a workspace that is free from distraction and noise will set you up for success.

“Business Writing Basics” focuses on specific skills that can help anyone write with greater precision and clarity. Understanding the foundations of sentence structures will help each participant compose stronger documents. Moreover, by practicing how to write different sentence patterns and how to edit out errors, participants will learn techniques for communicating ideas more clearly.

Instructor

Rosanne Simeone

Roseanne Simeone: Having earned her doctoral degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Virginia, Rosanne Simeone has taught English at the college and high-school levels. As a member of the University of Virginia’s Department of Science, Technology and Society Department (formerly the Division of Technology, Culture and Communication), she guided engineering students through their first forays into technical writing as well as their fourth-year theses. She taught professional writing at the Institute of Textile Technology, and she served as technical writer and Publications Director for the medical center’s Tissue Adhesive Center. Currently, she teaches Humanities, chairs the Capstone Thesis Committee, and advises the Honor Council at St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Virginia.

This course is designed for the professional who writes technical documents, such as internal evaluations, reports, proposals, and client communications. Anyone interested in sharpening his or her technical writing ability can benefit from this short course.
