Decision-making has become a major aspect of the transportation professional’s daily activity. Making good decisions is no longer a luxury but a necessity. This workshop will provide attendees with an analytical framework for decision-making from an economic viewpoint. Workshop attendees will be provided with the theory, knowledge, and tools used to analyze commonly-encountered engineering problems and make realistic choices between competing alternative solutions based on sound engineering and economic principles.
Lorenzo Casanova, P.E. currently works for the Federal Highway Administration in the Virginia Division. He has over 20 years’ experience as an engineer, mostly in the operation of manufacturing and construction processes; and the management of programs. He has extensive practical experience in engineering and economic analysis; and has held several positions in the public and private sectors as well as in academia. He has taught courses at several community colleges and universities in Florida and Delaware, as well as overseas, and is a registered P.E. in both states. He holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and earned his Masters of Engineering degree from the University of Florida.
Who Should Attend
This workshop is designed to introduce transportation professionals to the tools and techniques used to solve problems dealing with both replacement analysis and the process of choosing between alternative investments. It is intended for engineers, managers, and technicians, whether in public or private practice, interested in a basic understanding of, and a good foundation in, the principles of Engineering Economics and how these principles.

Special Registration Instructions for Employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation
VDOT employees must register through the VDOT Virtual Campus. Registration fees and related expenses for all VDOT employees will be paid from the VDOT Learning Services Center budget. Registrants should contact their District Training Coordinator or the VDOT Learning Services Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses.
Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend U. Va. TTA workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a U. Va. TTA workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Coordinator, or VDOT Learning Services Center on travel approval procedures.
