The University of Virginia invites you to attend a hands-on workshop for an introduction to hydraulic modeling using the Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System, HEC-RAS. This workshop teaches participants how to use the program primarily through direct application, requiring each participant to build, run, and analyze their own HEC-RAS model in various stages during the day. Model components to be covered include channel geometry data, steady flow data, simulation setup and execution, reviewing tabular and graphical results, and modeling bridges and culverts. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to determine necessary data input requirements for hydraulic modeling, develop a simple HEC-RAS model, perform steady flow analyses to compute water surface elevations, review and analyze simulation results, and incorporate bridge and culvert geometry into a 1D stream model. Participants will be provided with electronic files of all workshop material, including example projects and the software reference manuals.

This course is designed to include lectures and hands-on exercises with the HEC-RAS software.  Please bring a laptop with Microsoft Excel and HEC-RAS 5.0.6 downloaded before the day of the workshop. Kevin Waters

Kevin Waters, Ph.D., P.E. is the instructor for this one-day workshop. Dr. Waters is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Villanova University where he teaches water resources courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has over 4.5 years of consulting experience, most recently as a Water Resources Engineer with Amec Foster Wheeler in Chantilly, VA. In this position, he worked extensively with HEC-RAS and ArcGIS to conduct flood studies and flood impact analyses, in addition to leading an initiative to explore two-dimensional floodplain modeling capabilities in the newest version of HEC-RAS.

During his two years as a Senior Engineer at T.Y. Lin International-Medina in New Jersey, he developed HEC-RAS models for flood studies in support of FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program, including work on a 125-mile study of the Delaware River and several streams in Erie County, NY. In total, Dr. Waters has modeled and reviewed hundreds of miles of modeled streams in VA, WV, MD, NY, NJ, and MO.

Dr. Waters completed his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia in 2014 with research focused in open channel hydraulics and sediment transport in unsteady flows. He earned his M.E in Civil Engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, with a concentration in water resources, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Villanova University in 2007.
