The instructor for this course will present the key geometric principles and guidelines used to develop and design a roundabout. They will highlight the differences between older traffic circles and rotaries and new roundabout design features. They will also address the typical questions of why, where, when and how roundabouts should be considered as an appropriate intersection solution.

This course includes modules on recent research on US roundabout capacity, roundabout design techniques, and hands-on exercises including sketching a single-lane roundabout in a small group.

The basis for the course is NCHRP Report 672: Roundabouts: An Informational Guide, 2nd Edition, VDOT Roundabout policies and guidance, the latest information proposed for the 2015 HCM Update, other state-of-the practice research, and the collective experience of the instructors on roundabout projects and research.

Pete Jenior

Pete Jenior, PE, PTOE has designed, analyzed, or peer-reviewed roundabout concepts for over 75 intersections in nine states and developed signal timing plans for over 140 intersections. Pete is a member of TRB’s Geometric Design Committee, and has taught short courses on applied roundabout design, performance-based design, and Highway Safety Manual. Pete has also served as a lead researcher for NCHRP Report 772 Evaluation of the Performance of Roundabout Corridors, developed guidelines for accessibility treatments at roundabouts as part of NCHRP Project 3-78a and 3-78b, and prepared guidebooks for FHWA on four alternative intersection forms and part-time shoulder use on freeways

Who Should Attend

Staff responsible for roundabout or roadway design and their supervisors, including both state and local agencies as well as consultants. Engineers, designers, and planners interested in learning more about the fundamental principles behind roundabout design and evaluation should attend this course.
