This training is designed to provide participants with a better understanding of the value added by incorporating pavement preservation strategies into maintaining a roadway network. Gaining this better understating will be accomplished by providing participants the opportunity to become familiar with the general concept of pavement preservation and the valuable role it plays in maintaining a roadway network. Participants will gain more detailed knowledge necessary to properly incorporate the concept of pavement preservation into maintaining an interactive workshop. The strategically placed workshops provide hands-on learning opportunities by simulating real-world situations that require participants to systematically apply knowledge gained from this training to evaluate pavement preservation applicability, identify feasible strategies and determine appropriate treatments. Examples of good practices for determining candidate projects, selecting specific strategies and applying appropriate treatments provided throughout this training will support decision-making necessary to successfully complete the workshops.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
• Identify the components and value of a Pavement Preservation program;
• Identify the pavement conditions and other attributes that suggest whether pavement preservation is appropriate;
• Identify various pavement preservation strategies, techniques, and materials;
• State the performance characteristics of various pavement preservation strategies, techniques, and materials; and
• Select the appropriate strategy(ies), technique(s), and material to extend the service life and retard the development of pavement distress.

Mr. Dietz has worked for the FHWA for 23 years in various field-engineering positions in two states, Washington D.C., Central and Eastern Federal Lands, and now the Pavement and Materials Technical Service Team at the FHWA Resource Center in Lakewood, CO. Five years consulting for public and private construction related projects. He is actively involved in developing, improving and implementing technologies for pavement and materials and has also been actively involved in design, construction, pavement management, pavement preservation, testing and rehabilitation of asphalt and concrete pavements. He also provides technical assistance in pavement forensic investigations and review of material and construction related specifications. He currently serves as co-lead for the Every Day Counts (EDC-4) Pavement Preservation When, Where and How advancement efforts, the project manager for FHWA Resource Center of Tack Coat Workshops nationally in cooperation with Asphalt Institute and lead in developing a new NHI course on “Inspecting Asphalt Pavement Construction Projects”.
Jason obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno.
Mr. Dietz is a member of and provides support to various TRB subcommittees, and is a member of Association of Association of Asphalt Pavement Technologists (AAPT).
Chuck has been in the pavement preservation industry for 43 years. He began work for Slurry Pavers, Inc. in March 1977. Early on in his career with Slurry, he worked as a laborer, foreman and superintendent for several company crews. For the past 29 years Ingram has been in charge of Business Development for Slurry in the Mid-Atlantic region.
For the past several years he has been an instructor for the Slurry Systems Certification programs for VDOT & SCDOT, and has taken part in training for the Asphalt Institute, World of Asphalt and the National Center for Pavement Preservation (NCPP).
He is active with APWA, the Virginia Asphalt Assn., Va. Transportation Construction Alliance, and the County Engineers Assn. of MD.
Lives in Lynchburg, Va. and has four daughters and four grandchildren.
Who Should Attend
This training is ideal for roadway construction and maintenance teams, specifically the highway workers and inspectors involved in the placement of pavement preservation treatments. Design engineers will also benefit from the associated training.

Special Registration Instructions for Employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation
VDOT employees must register through the VDOT Virtual Campus. Registration fees and related expenses for all VDOT employees will be paid from the VDOT Learning Services Center budget. Registrants should contact their District Training Coordinator or the VDOT Learning Services Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses.
Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend U. Va. TTA workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a U. Va. TTA workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Coordinator, or VDOT Learning Services Center on travel approval procedures.
