This course is the first step in making your asphalt pavements last longer at lower cost.  The course covers preventive maintenance treatments such as chip seals, slurry seals, and microsurfacing and discusses when and where each technique could be effective. It presents application methods, including preparation, materials, equipment, operations and safety, along with practical tips on how to avoid trouble. We would suggest this as a prerequisite course to Road Surface Management.

Cracking, Raveling, Bleeding, Polishing, Rutting

11:30 -12:00  Explanation of Causes and Possible Cures of Distress:
Utility cuts, Depressions, Slippage, Rutting, Corrugations, Cracking, Block, Raveling, Bleeding, Polishing

12:30 – 3:00  Types of Seals , Objectives & Procedures

Fog seals, Seal Coats (Chip Seals, Oil and Chip), Slurry Seals, Microsurfacing, UTFCs Cape Seal, Sand Seals, Scrub Seals, and Rejuvenate


Edwin Stellfox

Mr. Edwin C. Stellfox is a civil engineer and former director of the Maryland LTAP Center.  He has a B.S. in Civil Engineering, a Master’s in Education from Penn State University and over 45 years experience in Public Works with 30 years transferring transportation technology with the LTAP Program.

Who Should Attend

The workshop is for government officials responsible for asset management, project planning, oversight, and inspection of roadway improvement projects. This includes public works directors, supervisors, road masters, and foremen.
