The ability to effectively develop and use schedules is fundamental to sound project management. This class will introduce participants to the schedule development process, and also to the use of project schedules for project control purposes. Participants will gain hands-on experience with common project management practices to reinforce key concepts.
This course will introduce participants to the basic concepts, challenges, and best practices with establishing and managing a project schedule. This course will provide participants with an overview of: 1) fundamentals of project scheduling, 2) the process of developing project schedules, 3) establishing a critical path, 4) potential risks impacting schedules, 5) project controls, 6) managing project schedules.

Jon Obenberger is lecturer for the University of Virginia’s Transportation Training Academy, the Essentials of Engineering Excellence Program, and the Transportation Project Management Institute (TPMI).
Dr. Obenberger has over 33 years of experience with leading programs, policy initiatives, projects, and day-to-day activities related to the planning, design, and operation of highways and local streets for local, regional, state, and Federal agencies. Dr. Obenberger is also a Senior Transportation Research Engineer in the Office of Operations Research and Development for the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) in McLean, VA. Dr. Obenberger leads initiatives and projects to advance the active management, operation and deployment of the next generation of traffic management systems and centers, the integration of these systems with connected and automated vehicles, and travelers using connected mobile devices. From 2004 to 2013, as the Preconstruction Team Leader he led a wide variety of initiatives aimed at advancing design practices nationally, enhancing FHWA’s design discipline, and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of FHWA’s stewardship and oversight of the Federal-aid highway program. Dr. Obenberger serves on numerous national committees and task forces. Dr. Obenberger member of TRB’s Traffic Control Devices Committee, member of TRB’s Active Traffic Management (ATM) Task Force, and former Chair of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Freeway Operations Committee (2012-2018). From 2004 to 2013 he was the secretary of the AASHTO Preconstruction Engineering Management Technical Committee. Dr. Obenberger earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. degree from Virginia Tech. He is a licensed professional engineer in Wisconsin.
Who Should Attend
State, local agency, contractor, Metropolitan Planning Organization, road authority, and academic staff who are responsible for or participate in developing, managing, or approving the scope and schedules for highway improvement project feasibility studies, projects, and other type of projects on the surface transportation system.

Special Registration Instructions for Employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation
VDOT employees must register through the VDOT Virtual Campus. Registration fees and related expenses for all VDOT employees will be paid from the VDOT Learning Services Center budget. Registrants should contact their District Training Coordinator or the VDOT Learning Services Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses.
Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend U. Va. TTA workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a U. Va. TTA workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Coordinator, or VDOT Learning Services Center on travel approval procedures.
