Description

The University of Virginia invites you to attend a workshop on risk management principles and how they are applied to construction projects at the Virginia Department of Transportation. This workshop teaches participants how to use basic risk principles and methodologies that can be applied to any application or program. The course will review specific VDOT construction project applications, examples, and benefits. Topics covered will include group exercises, partnering principles & values, the importance of communications, trust, and issue resolution, identifying project risks, barriers to progress, developing project surveys, risk mitigation plans, performance metrics, project charters, and various other components. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to better identify situations that arise over conflict and be prepared to resolve these issues more quickly on the job. Participants will be provided with a booklet and electronic files of all workshop material, and access to tables, spreadsheets, and databases that may aid them in properly partnering projects.

Instructor

George P. Gardner

George P. Gardner, P.E., CMC is currently a Senior Construction Engineer in the Central Office – Construction Division at VDOT.  George has also held several other leadership roles at VDOT including the Strategic Planning Manager, Staff Planning Manager, and Senior Policy and Planning Analyst positions.  Overall, George has close to thirty years of experience in engineering, program/project management, production/distribution management, policy and legislative analysis, partnering/risk management, strategic planning, and process analysis/improvement leadership positions in the private sector, as well as the federal and state government.  He holds an AAS and BS in Engineering and an MS in Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech, and is a graduate of the VDOT Executive and Advanced Leadership Institute.  He is a Registered Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Management Consultant (CMC), and Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB).  At the Institute of Industrial Engineers, George has served on the Construction Division – National Committee, was Asst. Vice-President for the Mid-Atlantic Region, and President of the Richmond Chapter.  Currently, he serves on the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a Program Evaluator, The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) with the PE Exam Development Committee, and is an Advisory Member to the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) Board.  He has conducted numerous presentations and workshops at various regional and national conferences on the subjects of project management, partnering, strategic planning, and performance management.

Marty Halloway

Marty Halloway, P.E., CCM is currently the District Project Controls Engineer for the Bristol District where he is responsible for assisting with the management of the day to day operations for the Construction program. Overall, Marty has over 15 years of experience in the transportation industry in construction engineering/management, land development, finance/budgeting, risk management, partnering, maintenance, strategic planning, traffic engineering, scheduling, and operations. He has served in leadership roles as Resident Engineer, Land Use Engineer, and District Area Construction Engineer.  In his current role he is focusing on improving pre-construction activities to reduce risk, work orders, overruns, and  other pit falls to help deliver the construction program successfully.  Marty received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia College at Wise, and graduate degree in Engineering from Old Dominion University.
