This course is intended to provide an overview of the basics of roadway geometric design, particularly establishment of the alignment and selection of design elements and their impacts on safety. The course material is grouped into five general topics: selection of design elements, horizontal alignment, superelevation, vertical alignment, and current topics. The current topics module provides overviews of trends that impact safety for all users, such as the complete streets movement, traffic calming, and context sensitive solutions.
Rod E. Turochy
Dr. Rod E. Turochy, P.E. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Auburn University, where he has been teaching since 2001. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering at Virginia Tech and his Ph.D. at the University of Virginia. Dr. Turochy teaches courses in transportation engineering, traffic engineering, roadway design, and intelligent transportation systems. His current research activities are in the areas of traffic engineering and data analysis, highway safety, and engineering education. Dr. Turochy also has four years of work experience with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). In his last position with VDOT, he was responsible for traffic design and work zone safety for the Salem District.
Who Should Attend
This course is designed for anyone with an interest in learning, or reviewing, the basics of roadway design, in any field of transportation engineering. The main focus of the course is on development of horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, and superelevation. Little prior knowledge of geometric design is assumed; therefore, this course can serve as a foundation for the less-experienced roadway design engineer or engineering technician or as a refresher for the experienced roadway design engineer

Special Registration Instructions for Employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation
VDOT employees must register through the VDOT Virtual Campus. Registration fees and related expenses for all VDOT employees will be paid from the VDOT Learning Services Center budget. Registrants should contact their District Training Coordinator or the VDOT Learning Services Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses.
Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend U. Va. TTA workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a U. Va. TTA workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Coordinator, or VDOT Learning Services Center on travel approval procedures.
