Description

Prerequisites:

  • Students are to bring their own WiFi capable laptops to class
  • ArcGIS Pro software should be installed and ready to use on student laptops
  • Previous experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop software version 10.x

This course is geared towards the intermediate level GIS user who wants to learn more about the unique aspects and concepts of transportation GIS such as linear referencing and dynamic segmentation.  Students will be provided information in lecture format as well as have the opportunity to apply real world examples using ArcGIS software.  A number of federal and state transportation datasets will be shared and discussed, with students creating and publishing maps on the internet.

Module 1:  Basic concepts of Geographic Information Systems

Instructor

Dan Widner

Dan Widner has 36 years of diverse experience in GIS and Mapping in the federal, state and private sector.  Most recently he was the Virginia State GIS Coordinator at the Virginia Geographic Information Network, where he provided strategic GIS coordination and leadership for Virginia state and local government and represented Virginia GIS at the federal and national level.  His transportation GIS experience stems from eight years as GIS Program Manager at the Virginia Department of Transportation and from four years at a commercial GIS software firm.  Dan has a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from Indiana University and currently is an independent consultant.
