This hybrid online class will combine both live instruction and independent online work that you will complete during the day. Independent work will include quizzes, readings, videos and short assignments. Access to a computer with a webcam (either a camera that is built into your laptop or one that connects via USB), a reliable internet connection and a workspace that is free from distraction and noise will set you up for success.
This training identifies systems that drive human behavior and the impact on designing and implementing systems or programs. Road safety is a complex issue, and any efforts to improve safety must address not only the roadway but also road user behavior, vehicle design, interaction between road users, and the effect of the roadway on all road users. This course will identify the key principles of human behaviors and the importance in including education, safety messaging and awareness in road safety planning.

Kelly Powell has been Safe Kids Coordinator and Program Director in Palm Beach County, Florida for over 18 years, and has been in the field of injury prevention for over 22 years in Florida.
Additionally, Kelly has been a National Child Passenger Safety Technician Instructor for 21 years and has been fortunate to train technicians nationally, and internationally; supporting the development of the child passenger safety program in Qatar.
Kelly has been working with the University of Virginia as a Subject Matter Expert for Motor Vehicle Injury Prevention with the Tribal Technical Assistance Program (TTAP) and now with the Road Safety Champion Program (RSCP).
Kelly has served on the Safe Kids Worldwide President’s Advisory Council on the Network and Advocacy Team. Kelly is a member of the Florida Injury Prevention Advisory Council’s Public Information, Education and Relations Committee and has been instrumental in developing a statewide child passenger safety program for transportation on ambulances. Also, in 2019 Kelly was selected as the Coordinator of the International Consortium for Children in Autonomous Vehicles; Public Information and Education team. She is a member of the Florida Safe Kids Advisory Board, Florida Occupant Protection Coalition and is an appointed member of the Florida Child Fatality Review Team. Kelly has served on the Florida Booster Seat Coalition and has been instrumental in passing the current booster seat law in Florida.

This class was designed for managers and workers alike. Engineers, managers, planners, and public health and safety professionals will recognize the roles and responsibilities of various disciplines and approaches to improving road safety.

Special Registration Instructions for Employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation
VDOT employees must register through the VDOT Virtual Campus. Registration fees and related expenses for all VDOT employees will be paid from the VDOT Learning Services Center budget. Registrants should contact their District Training Coordinator or the VDOT Learning Services Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses.
Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend U. Va. TTA workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a U. Va. TTA workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Coordinator, or VDOT Learning Services Center on travel approval procedures.
