Description
This hands-on workshop introduces hydraulic modeling using the Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System, HEC-RAS. The workshop teaches participants how to use the program primarily through direct application, requiring each participant to build, run, and analyze their own 1D HEC-RAS model in progressive stages during the day. After discussion on the setup and theoretical considerations of the program, model components will be covered including channel geometry and steady flow data, steady flow simulation setup and execution, tabular and graphical results, and modeling bridges and culverts. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to determine necessary data input requirements for a basic hydraulic model, develop a simple 1D HEC-RAS model from scratch, perform steady flow analyses to compute water surface elevations, review and analyze simulation results, and incorporate bridge and culvert geometry into a 1D stream model.
This course is designed to include lecture, discussion, and hands-on exercises in the HEC-RAS software. Participants must bring a laptop with Microsoft Excel and HEC-RAS downloaded before the day of the workshop. Go to https://www.hec.usace.army.mil/software/hec-ras/download.aspx to download Version 6.2 a week before the class takes place. If you are not able to bring a laptop with these programs, then you will work with another participant, and you may want to bring a USB/flash drive to save your work. Please also bring a calculator.

K
Kevin Waters, Ph.D., P.E. is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Villanova University where he teaches courses in water resources and GIS at the undergraduate and graduate levels. A faculty member since 2016, he received the Teaching Excellence Award in 2022 from the Villanova University Engineering Alumni Society.
Dr. Waters has over 4.5 years of consulting experience, most recently as a Water Resources Engineer with Wood PLC in Chantilly, VA. In this position, he worked extensively in HEC-RAS and ArcGIS to conduct flood studies and flood impact analyses in support of FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program. He started in this type of work as a Senior Engineer at T.Y. Lin International-Medina in New Jersey, developing HEC-RAS models for numerous flood studies, including a 125-mile study of the Delaware River and streams in Erie County, NY. In total, Dr. Waters has developed and reviewed hundreds of miles of HEC-RAS stream models in VA, WV, MD, NY, NJ, and MO.
Dr. Waters completed his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia in 2014 with research focused in open channel hydraulics and sediment transport in unsteady flows. He earned his M.E in Civil Engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, with a concentration in water resources, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Villanova University in 2007.
Who Should Attend
This workshop was developed for engineers who want to learn more about hydraulic modeling and/or HEC-RAS, want to refresh on fundamental concepts related to 1D HEC-RAS modeling, or for those who need a working knowledge of the software to perform review work. The workshop is introductory. Therefore, previous experience with HEC-RAS is not required.

Special Registration Instructions for Employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation
VDOT employees must register through the VDOT Virtual Campus. Registration fees and related expenses for all VDOT employees will be paid from the VDOT Learning Services Center budget. Registrants should contact their District Training Coordinator or the VDOT Learning Services Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses.
Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend U. Va. TTA workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a U. Va. TTA workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Coordinator, or VDOT Learning Services Center on travel approval procedures.
