This course is intended to delve into topics beyond basics of roadway geometric design. After a brief review of design actors and establishment of horizontal and vertical alignments, topics addressed include roadside design, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and safety implications of intersection design decisions.

Rod E. Turochy

Dr. Rod E. Turochy, P.E. is the James M. Hunnicutt Professor of Traffic Engineering at Auburn University, where he has been teaching since 2001.  He also directs the Alabama Transportation Assistance Program – Alabama’s LTAP Center.  He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering at Virginia Tech and his Ph.D. at the University of Virginia.  Before pursuing graduate studies, Dr. Turochy had four years of work experience with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).  In his last position with VDOT, he was responsible for traffic design and work zone safety for the Salem District.  At Auburn, Dr. Turochy currently teaches courses in traffic engineering and roadway design.  His current research activities are in the areas of traffic engineering, traffic simulation, and road safety.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for anyone with an interest in learning about roadway design concepts beyond the basics of developing an alignment. Some prior knowledge of the basics of geometric design is assumed; it is recommended that course attendees have completed the Roadway Geometric Design I (basic) course or have some experience in roadway design. Roadway design engineers at all levels may benefit from the course.
