Description
The course will educate the student on the best practice of selecting, designing, and constructing barrier systems. This course will cover guardrail systems and requirements, barrier warrants, W-beams, special designs and site preparation and testing requirements. An exam will be given at the end of class. In order to receive your certification card, you will need to score 80 or higher.

Instructor
William M. "Matt" Barret
Matt Barret is a Civil Engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation in Richmond Virginia where he has worked within the Agency’s Location and Design Division since 2006.
Matt graduated from the JSRCC/ODU TeleTech program in 1997 with an Associates Degree in Civil Engineering. Since joining VDOT, Matt has been responsible for administering the VDOT GRIT training program, including training more than 5000 students, and instructing more than 200 classes. Matt was also involved in administering VDOT Guardrail crash testing in 2015 and 2016 in southern California.
Prior to his VDOT career, Matt spent 10 years with a private Engineering firm in Richmond where he was a Highway Design Project Manager.
Who Should Attend
This course is required for Construction Inspectors and Highway/ Traffic Engineers who are involved with the design, construction, and inspection of guardrail and barrier systems.

VDOT employees must register through the VDOT Virtual Campus. Registration fees and related expenses for all VDOT employees will be paid from the VDOT Learning Services Center budget. Registrants should contact their District Training Coordinator or the VDOT Learning Services Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses.
Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend U. Va. TTA workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a U. Va. TTA workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Coordinator, or VDOT Learning Services Center on travel approval procedures.
