Description

As traffic volumes increase and the need to repair and improve roadways becomes greater, so does the need to plan, install, and review work zone traffic control to effectively and safely perform the work. Federal requirements now instruct state and local governments to train personnel in work zone traffic control relevant to the job decisions that each individual is required to make. This workshop provides training needed to properly install work zones to perform daily maintenance or short-term operations. Emphasis is placed on the basics of work zone traffic control, focusing on work zone devices and how to effectively install and maintain them. At the conclusion of this workshop, a short open-book written exam will be administered to all attendees. A VDOT-issued training card will be given to each attendee who achieves a passing grade of 80% or higher.

Basic Work Zone Traffic Control is for individuals who have:

  1. Direct responsibility for placement of work zone traffic control devices
  2. Direct responsibility for field maintenance of work zone traffic control devices

Instructor

William M. (Billy) Green

William M. (Billy) Green is the Principal and Instructor for StraightPath Consulting. He brings over 40 years of “hands on” experience in the construction inspection and management field. Billy started as an Inspector Trainee and advanced through the Inspection field to Inspector, Senior Inspector, Project Engineer and before retiring from VDOT was the Senior Construction Manager for the NOVA District. He worked as the State Construction Manager for Volkert, Inc. after retiring from VDOT before creating StraightPath Consulting which specializes in teaching Work Zone Safety, Local Area Project Audits, LAP project management, OSHA training and other training activities. Billy is ATSSA certified as a Traffic Control Supervisor, and certified to conduct VDOT Flagger, Advanced, Intermediate and Basic Work Zone Safety Control. He holds VDOT certifications in Asphalt, Soils & Aggregate, Concrete, Surface Treatment, Slurry Seal, ACI Concrete, E & S, Storm Water Management and Guardrail Installation (GRIT). He is also a certified OSHA 10 & 30 trainer as well as a Partnering Facilitator. He was the principal organizer, designer and instructor for VDOT in the implementation of Inspector Level I & II Technical Certification Schools, Plan Reading, Survey and Bridge Certification Schools. He has attended the Certified Construction Manager program. He was twice the recipient of the VDOT Commissioner’s Award for Excellence and twice awarded the NOVA District Administrator’s award for Outstanding Achievement.  StraightPath Consulting has recently been honored by being selected at a certified S.W.a.M. and Micro Business.

Individuals involved in maintenance-type activities who have responsibility for placement of and/or maintenance of work zone traffic control devices, including maintenance-level personnel, crew leaders, and public works personnel.
