The Virginia LTAP, in partnership with the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC), the research leg of VDOT, invite you to join us for a one-hour lunch and learn event. This new series will showcase VTRC’s transportation innovation and research.

These monthly, one-hour events will take place at various locations across the Commonwealth from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. You may join remotely via Zoom or attend in-person. Lunch will be provided for those who attend in-person. Those attending in-person will also receive some swag.

TOPIC: Advances in Pavement Testing and Rehabilitation

Recent advances in pavement testing and rehabilitation include assessing the structural capacity of pavements using equipment traveling at traffic speeds and the use of pavement recycling techniques. VDOT is the lead agency of a pooled fund study where highway agencies from 23 states are conducting pavement structural testing using a Traffic Speed Deflection Device (TSDD). In addition to this leading role, VDOT has has completed testing on more than 7,000 miles of its pavement network using this system.

Testing with a TSDD can give an agency detailed information about the structural capacity of its pavement network that is more complete and can be obtained many times faster than previous methods. Where the TSDD testing shows pavements to be structurally deficient, pavement recycling techniques can be used for rehabilitation at lower cost and reduced environmental emissions. VDOT is a national leader in using pavement recycling techniques on higher volume routes (including I-81 and I-64) but could make better use of these techniques in other areas. This presentation will discuss these concepts and provide examples from case studies.

Brian Diefenderfer

Brian Diefenderfer is a Principal Research Scientist at VTRC where he has worked for the last 20 years. His research focuses on pavement design, rehabilitation, and recycling techniques that can be used to reduce costs and improve the performance of VDOTs pavements network. Brian received his PhD in civil engineering from Virginia Tech in 2002 and is a Professional Engineer.
