Description

The Virginia Transportation Research Council conducted a comprehensive nine-month field testing study of the Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck to evaluate its potential for integration into VDOT’s vehicle fleet. The study included extensive real-world testing of vehicle performance under various conditions including towing, cold weather operations, mountainous terrain, low-speed work zones, and charging infrastructure requirements. Key findings revealed that while the electric truck performed consistently with manufacturer estimates under standard driving conditions, it experienced significant operational limitations during towing operations (50-70% range reduction) and cold weather conditions. The vehicle was found to be suitable for light-duty tasks, but is not recommended for towing or emergency 24/7 operations.
