Description
In Virginia, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is typically used in asphalt mixtures due to its economic and environmental benefits. Despite its advantages, the use of RAP can pose some challenges regarding durability and performance if the mixtures are not designed in an engineered manner. Among the several solutions existent to mitigate the potential adverse effects of RAP, the use of recycling agents (RAs) is gaining considerable attention within the asphalt industry. Different studies have been conducted by the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC) on the use of RAs in asphalt surface mixtures in Virginia. This presentation highlights the main findings and outcomes from these studies as well as the development and verification of two performance-based frameworks, one to evaluate the potential acceptance of RAs into VDOT’s Approved List, including an objective methodology to determine the RA optimum dosage, and one to design asphalt surface mixtures with RA using a balanced mix design (BMD) approach.
Instructor
Kazuo Kuchiishi
Kazuo Kuchiishi is a research scientist at the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC) the research division of VDOT. Kazuo holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Sao Paulo, in Brazil, and a Master’s degree in Transportation Engineering from the same institution. Kazuo also holds a Ph.D. degree from North Carolina State University. His research is focused on the characterization and performance modeling of asphalt materials and pavements, including topics related to balanced mix design, mechanistic evaluation, and cold recycling. When he is not busy with research, you might find him spending time with his family – specifically running around the park after his daughter.

Special Registration Instructions for Employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation
VDOT employees must register through the VDOT Virtual Campus. Registration fees and related expenses for all VDOT employees will be paid from the VDOT Learning Services Center budget. Registrants should contact their District Training Coordinator or the VDOT Learning Services Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses.
Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend U. Va. TTA workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a U. Va. TTA workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Coordinator, or VDOT Learning Services Center on travel approval procedures.
