This hybrid online class will combine both live instruction and independent online work that you will complete during the day.  Independent work will include quizzes, readings, videos and short assignments.  Access to a computer with a webcam (either a camera that is built into your laptop or one that connects via USB), a reliable internet connection and a workspace that is free from distraction and noise will set you up for success.

Choosing the right paving material can make the difference between a roadway that performs for decades and one that requires constant repair.

This half-day online course is designed for agency supervisors, highway officials, street foremen, construction supervisors, and others involved in roadway construction and maintenance who want a practical, easy-to-understand overview of today’s most common—and emerging—pavement materials.

Participants will explore the properties, applications, and limitations of a wide range of road surface materials, including asphalt, concrete, brick, stone, earthen roads, and unique or specialty paving options. The course also highlights newer innovations in pavement engineering and provides clear guidelines to help determine which materials are best suited for different roadway conditions, maintenance needs, and project goals.

  • Overview of common road pavement surface materials

  • Asphalt: properties, performance, and typical uses

  • Concrete: properties, performance, and typical uses

  • Brick and stone paving materials

  • Earthen road materials and their applications

  • Unique and specialty paving materials

  • How to determine the best materials for specific road maintenance and construction needs

  • New and emerging innovations in pavement engineering

  • Guidelines for selecting and using road construction materials

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and understand the most commonly used road paving materials

  • Confidently select the most appropriate paving materials for a variety of road maintenance and construction projects

This practical, decision-focused training equips participants with the knowledge they need to make informed, cost-effective choices that improve roadway performance and longevity.

Tony DeCresie brings a very diverse and extensive background spanning numerous industries and businesses – working with both public and private entities. He is a nationally recognized and awarded training manager with several different organizations over the past 25 years.

Tony’s primary area of focus revolves around transportation, highway & road work site safety training and heavy equipment operations safety.
