This hybrid online class will combine both live instruction and independent online work that you will complete during the day. Independent work will include quizzes, readings, videos and short assignments. Access to a computer with a webcam (either a camera that is built into your laptop or one that connects via USB), a reliable internet connection and a workspace that is free from distraction and noise will set you up for success.
Description
A Road Safety Assessment (RSA) is the formal safety performance examination of an existing or future road or intersection by an independent, multidisciplinary team. It qualitatively estimates and reports on potential road safety issues and identifies opportunities for improvements in safety for all road users.
RSAs are performed by a team (at least three auditors) who represent a variety of experience and expertise (design, traffic, maintenance, construction, safety, local officials, enforcement personnel, first-responders, human factors) specifically tailored to the project.
Participants will learn the steps to perform a Road Safety Assessment, better identify projects for RSAs, and walk away with the resources and confidence to conduct an RSA.
Public agencies with a desire to improve the overall safety performance of roadways under their jurisdiction should be excited about the concept of RSAs.

Instructor
Diann Wilson
Diann Wilson has had two years of experience as the State of Oklahoma Traffic Incident Management Coordinator. She is a Nationally Certified Master Trainer from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and a Certified National Instructor from the National Highway Institute (NHI). Diann has developed online curriculum for Virginia DOT, University of Virginia, Federal Highway Administration, and OKC MetroTech Technology Center. She also brings years of educating first responders on proper emergency response practices. She is the owner and consultant for Winning Strategies for 19 years. The services provided include grant writing, grant administration & management, fun raising consultant, and seminars and trainings. Diann served as a reserve deputy for the Seminole County Sheriff’s Department, as a Butner School Board Member for 10 years, and was a speaker for Victim’s Impact Panel for 22 years.
Overall, Diann is an experienced educator who combines hands on experience with effective research practices that produces an effective adult learning environment. One of her most proud accomplishments is being a mother of six children, grandmother to 22 grandchildren, and a great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren.
Who Should Attend
This class was developed to provide road safety audit training to managers and workers alike. Engineers, road supervisors, crew leaders, equipment operators, laborers, transportation professionals, first responders, and local agency officials will learn how to perform a road safety audit. Attendees will gain knowledge of a process on how to take a proactive approach to roadway safety, reducing injuries and fatalities on their roads.

Special Registration Instructions for Employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation
VDOT employees must register through the VDOT Virtual Campus. Registration fees and related expenses for all VDOT employees will be paid from the VDOT Learning Services Center budget. Registrants should contact their District Training Coordinator or the VDOT Learning Services Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses.
Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend U. Va. TTA workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a U. Va. TTA workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Coordinator, or VDOT Learning Services Center on travel approval procedures.
